Unified Play 60

In a day filled with football, fitness, and fun, fourth-grade students from Baker Elementary recently participated in the annual Unified Play 60 event at The Star in Frisco, alongside Dallas Cowboys players, alumni, and cheerleaders. This unique opportunity, facilitated by Special Olympics Texas, brought together students of all abilities for an unforgettable experience of inclusivity and athletic engagement.

A Day of Diverse Activities

The event featured six football stations run by current and former Dallas Cowboys players, where students honed their skills and learned new drills. A cheer and dance station led by two Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders got everyone moving to the beat. Additionally, a nutrition station provided valuable dietary advice through the My Plate program, emphasizing the importance of healthy eating habits.

Kelli Smith, a PE teacher at Baker Elementary, emphasized the school's commitment to inclusion: "We want each child to feel valued and want our environment to be a safe place where students can take risks to learn new things, and find ways to include everyone in our activities."

Impact on Students

The event left a lasting impression on the young participants. Declan Donovan, a fourth-grader, exclaimed, "It was the best day ever!" Many students had never visited The Star before and were treated to an experience they won't soon forget. Each student received a t-shirt, a drawstring goodie bag, and lunch was provided for all attendees.

The impact extended beyond just fun and games. Special education staff noted how rewarding it was to see students thriving outside their routine and in new environments. Parents and students alike expressed their gratitude for the experience.

Unexpected Generosity

In a surprise turn of events, the Texas Lottery presented Baker Elementary's PE program with a $2,500 grant. "I was in such shock to see that we were given $2500 for our Baker PE program,” Smith said. “ What a blessing! We certainly didn't expect to receive anything, so this was a sweet and special surprise!" The funds will be used to provide more equipment and resources for students across the entire campus.

Lasting Memories

The event's success was evident in the continued enthusiasm of staff and students long after the day concluded. "Their generosity and kindness have made a lasting impact on our school community,” Smith said. “ We are so grateful."

For the fourth graders  of Baker Elementary, this wasn't just a day out of school – it was an opportunity to learn, grow, and create memories that will last a lifetime. The Unified Play 60 event exemplified the power of sports to bring people together, promote inclusivity, and inspire the next generation of athletes and community leaders.
