LEGISLATIVE CHANGE IN LAW REGARDING VAPES/E-CIGARETTES

At the recent July 24 Board of Trustees meeting, the 2023-2024 Student Code of Conduct was approved, incorporating a new law from the 88th Texas Legislature. The law in question is House Bill 114, passed and signed by Governor Greg Abbott on June 13. This law mandates that any student caught with a vape on school premises MUST be placed into a disciplinary alternative education program (DAEP).

We understand this is a significant departure from the consequences students faced in the previous school year. It's essential to be aware that possession of a vape on a Prosper ISD campus or property will now lead to a DAEP placement, which could impact a student's participation in extracurricular and co-curricular activities.

What can you do as a parent?

As parents, you play a crucial role in helping your child understand the seriousness of this change. We know that vapes are accessible to students, and they may obtain them from peers or online. For this reason, discussing the potential consequences of possessing a vape on school grounds with your child would be beneficial. It's essential to remember that even well-behaved students can make mistakes, and guidance from parents is invaluable in helping them make the right choices.
